QUALIFYING FORMAT FOR 2018

Post by FUEL on December 14th 2017, 3:09 am

QUALIFYING PROCEDURES

- Top 36 in qualifying will make the races on speed.

- The rest of the field in qualifying for positions 37th-42nd will be our provisional starters.

PROVISIONAL PROCEDURES

What the heck even is a provisional?

Five provisional starting spots are available for positions 37-41. These positions are based on the current Sony Cup Series car OWNER points. The 42nd and final starting position is available to any eligible past Sony Cup Series champion who fails to make the field through qualifying, starting with the most recent champion. If there are no eligible past champions, the 42nd spot will be filled through current Sony Cup Series car OWNER points, with the team highest in the OWNER points, not in the field, getting the spot.

How are provisionals awarded?

Teams who have attempted ALL the Cup races get the provisional awarded first, then it goes down the order by attempts, then OWNERS points.

How are provisionals awarded at the beginning of the season?

Last year's owner points will be determined for the first four races of the season. The fifth race of the season will mark as the start of using the 2018 Owner Points. New teams starting out the year will have zero provisionals until Round 5. Unless that team has a past champion and needs to use a past champion's provisional.

How many provisionals are allotted for the season?

Each team will be given 5 provisionals to start the 2018 Season. If a team is inside the Top 25 in Owner Points they will not be charged for using a provisional. So if a team were to use all 5 of it's provisionals and get inside the Top 25 in Owner Points they will be eligible to use a provisional because Top 25 in Owner Points will not be charged for using a provisional.

Are there any restrictions to using a provisional?

If a team is currently in the top 25 in owner points, a provisional start is awarded but a provisional is not charged against the total allowed. Only teams 26th or worse in OWNERS points will be charged a provisional. If a team stays in the top 25 all season, it can use a provisional spot for every race.

Provisionals can be gained back through out the year.

For every 12 races in the 36 race season, you will earn a provisional back. This means after Race 12 and 24 there will be 1 provisional granted to every team in the series.

Official Statement: Qualifying will be recorded in 2017 on Friday's at 4PM EST.

- Group Qualifying will set the field (Only Exception: DAYTONA 500 Pole Day Qualifying). The way the field will be split into groups is off owner points. Odd number cars in last year's owner points will be apart of Group 1 Qualifying and even number cars in last years owner points will be apart of Group 2 Qualifying.

- After every 12 races we will split the qualifying field by Owner Points. So after Round 12 and Round 24 we will use 2018's Owner Points to split the field accordingly of where they stand. This will help keep team's on an equal and fair playing field through out the season.

- Top 18 in group qualifying, qualify in on time. Group 1 Qualifiers will start on the inside row, Group 2 Qualifiers will start on the outside row.

- If the fastest qualifier in Group 2 is faster than Group 1's qualifier than Group 2's fastest driver will win the pole for the race and he will start on the inside row.

Here is who will be in Group 1 and Group 2 Qualifying for Round 1-12. This is determined off 2017 Owner Points, after Round 6 we will split the field by 2018 Owner Points. We will do the same thing after Round 12, 18, 24, and 30.
