Charlie Smith breaks through and finally finds victory lane
Charlie Smith over his years has had to work his way up the ranks and has seen the highest of highs and the lowest of lows in the teams he drives for. Smith had never found victory lane in his career over the course of driving in the Sony Cup Series and Hardee's National Series until this past weekend. Many times including 2015 subbing for Sean Perkins, Charlie Smith was in position to get the win. For the Cup Series, Smith has struggled in the past 2 years with Athenian. Charlie Smith has been around the 30's in points the past few years with the team and hasn't ever really been a huge threat to win until this year Smith was sitting in the Top 5 at the Philippines and moved up to 2nd at one moment at Dover within 10 to go. Smith's luck in the HNS has been relatively similar however Smith over the past few years has showed major promise and nearly pulling off multiple wins this year. Smith has been super quick but has had some serious bad luck keeping him out of victory lane. His biggest threat from Richmond was the young gun of Eric Demax making only 2nd start ever in the series leading laps, Demax ended up having troubles and once he was taken out of the occasion, Smith ran away with it. Charlie Smith moved from 16th to 11th in the title fight and keeping his name realistically in the hunt for making a comeback for the title with 15 races to go, sitting 87 back to point lead Garrett Sydnor.
